BROWNIE GIFFORD NO ORDINARY CANINE
This story reveals a part of Talbot county life that is probably
gone forever.
Joe Giffords beloved dog Brownie, was on the boat when Joe worked the water and walked the
whole distance (more than a mile away) to school with Joe and his brothers and sisters.
Brownie followed Joe everywhere.
The school went from first grade to fourth grade. Mrs. Antinette Covington and Gladys Ball
taught there.
Brownie attended the Wittman school with Joe and continued to go there, even when Joe went
on to school in St. Michaels.
He would go to the back of the room and lay there until the recess bell rang, then he would
dash out with the kids and get a drink of water, when recess was over, he would come back in and take his place in the back
of the room.
When the school closed, in 1949, Brownie received his certificate which read, "completed the
course of study as prescribed for the elementary grades, one, two, three and four".
